Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, to perform a variety of duties involved in assisting with the preparation of laboratory materials and demonstrations; and to perform various support services, which are directly related to the cosmetology programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Support the cosmetology and esthetician laboratories and instructors by ensuring the efficient operation of the dispensary or other work areas.
b. Prepare, issue and sell supplies, equipment, and chemicals to students.
c. Assemble and distribute student kits, kit information lists, and provide updated price information for ordering kits.
d. Maintain cosmetology and esthetician dispensary and laboratory equipment; sanitize and sterilize cosmetology and esthetician laboratory equipment; maintain general cleanliness of cosmetology and esthetician laboratory, dispensary and other storage areas.
e. Maintain adequate supplies of inventory in dispensary or other storage areas and replenish when necessary; prepare lists of needed supplies.
f. Respond to inquiries from students and the public by providing general information regarding the cosmetology and esthetician programs.
g. Set up laboratories and demonstrations for instructors and guest speakers.
h. Maintain accurate records such as student files, patron services records, and time cards; prepare and audit student records for forwarding to the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing agency.
i. Assist with the implementation of OSHA Lab Standard and Chemical Hygiene Plan.
j. Prepare and deliver cash deposits; receive shipments.
k. Maintain inventory and other records of stock; rotate products for use according to shelf life and reorder supplies and equipment as needed; contact vendors to obtain product information; order supplies to maintain appropriate inventory for classroom laboratory use.
l. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Faculty/Educational Administrators complete the Equivalency Application only if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position you are applying to, and you wish to be considered. Knowledge of:
1. Local, state and federal rules and regulations governing the cosmetology programs.
2. Current products and chemical preparations and their use.
3. Physical characteristics of chemical components used in the cosmetology and esthetician industry.
4. Storage, use, and disposal of chemicals.
5. Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the cosmetology and esthetician career fields.
6. Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures.
7. OSHA standards as related to cosmetology products.
8. Principles and procedures of record keeping and inventory control.
9. Computer software used for word processing and record keeping.

Ability to:
10. Measure, dilute, mix and dispense chemicals.
11. Maintain accurate records, which may include computer use.
12. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
13. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
14. Answer questions for instructors and students concerning product information, equipment care and use and potential hazards of chemical products.
15. Provide information to students on various procedures used in the dispensary lab.
16. Operate and make basic repairs, adjustments and service to cosmetology equipment.
17. Contact vendors to obtain information; order supplies to maintain appropriate inventory of products and chemicals for classroom laboratory use.
18. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
19. Cross train to assist as needed in related areas.

Education and Experience:
20. Possession of a valid and appropriate California Cosmetologist's License.
21. At least one year of recent full-time salon experience.
22. Experience in the preparation and storage of cosmetology chemicals and supplies and sterilization of equipment.
23. Or, a combination of education and experience that would provide the equivalent qualifications.

24. Incumbent must be able to meet and perform the physical requirements of this position.
Desired Qualifications 1. Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish or Vietnamese may be desirable for some positions.
Minimum Qualifications, continued
Conditions of Employment This is a regular, full time, 12 month per year position. The normal hours of work are to be arranged between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Salary Range $37,535.00 (Step 1) - $45,753.00 (Step 5) Annually

Based on the 2009-2010 Salary Schedule
Pay Philosophy Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. Employees hired prior to April 1 of each year will move to the next step on the upcoming July 1. Employees hired on or after April 1 of each year will move to the next step the following July 1. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.

Benefits: The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment.
